Evan & Tiki: Are Yankee fans starting to turn on Juan Soto?

One of the main exhibits of his argument was Shaun Morash booing Soto in the Bronx over the weekend, after declaring that Yankee fans couldn’t boo Soto all year to convince him to sign long term.

“It was jarring when I looked up at the scoreboard,” Morash said in explanation of his actions. “‘You’re 0-for-3 with three strikeouts? Get the heck outta here.’”

Evan wondered if it was a sign of trouble that Morash would already boo Soto just months after pleading with fans not to all season, but Morash actually saw it as an encouraging sign when it comes to keeping Soto in pinstripes for life.

“In this spot with Juan Soto, I think we’ve reached, earlier than expected, a comfortability,” Morash said. “He is a Yankee. He’s not going anywhere. He’s embraced us, so at this point, we’re treating you the same way we treated Aaron Judge.”

Then, he pulled out an all-time analogy to describe what it was like booing a player that is already beloved and seemingly still in the honeymoon phase of his relationship with the fanbase.

“I viewed me booing Juan Soto the same way someone passes gas in front of a significant other for the first time,” Morash said. “You’re not sure how it landed yet, so I’m gonna pull back and wait a little bit, because nobody has acknowledged. I’m not gonna pull back my decree. I’m gonna stop booing him from this point forward…if we’re comfortable with each other again, then it’s all gas from here on out.”
