The world can be a scary place when you're a baby. Everything is unfamiliar and mysterious, and you never know what to expect from one minute to the next. As parents, we have to remember that the ordinary, everyday things we take for granted can be pretty intimidating to our little ones...even when they're not in any actual danger!

In a video posted on June 22, a baby is trying to figure out how she feels about something that's equal parts terrifying and fascinating...the vacuum. Apparently, the little girl loves playing with the switch on her mom's Hetty, and she gets upset if it doesn't turn on...but she's also super scared when it does!

"She gets mad if she flicks the switch and nothing comes on even though it scares her," wrote @jesstear1998 . The way she jumps when the machine starts is so cute! She's definitely learning to be brave, but that noise is just too much!

Why Are Babies Afraid of Vacuums?

As Romper reported, it's perfectly normal for little ones to get scared whenever you run the vacuum. Because they have immature nervous systems , it's hard for them to "handle certain sensory input" like loud noises.

Even trying to vacuum with your baby in the other room won't necessarily help the situation. Starting at about five months, "they begin to understand the concept of object permanence, which means they realize that things exist even if they're out of sight. So while you may be able to get away with vacuuming in the other room because they can't see that demon machine, your little one may now understand that the vacuum cleaner still exists and could come back at any moment."

Holding your baby while you vacuum can calm your baby down, even though that makes your job a bit more difficult . You can also try letting your baby "help" if they're toddling or walking.

Interestingly enough, some babies and toddlers have the opposite reaction to vacuums. Newsweek reported on one U.K. boy who went viral for his " obsession with vacuum cleaners of every shape and size." According to his mother, "at first, the noise scared him, but eventually he started to like watching me clean up and would bring me the vacuum crying then I got him a couple of toy ones and the rest is history."

They say love and hate are two sides of the same coin!
