HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Fire crews have responded to the Laurel Mall after smoke was coming from different areas in Boscov’s department store.

28/22 News Andy Mehalshick spoke with Rocco Arruzzo the mall manager who says Tuesday morning Boscov’s reported having lights flickering and the registers were not working.

Employees noticed there was smoke coming from their stockroom and cash offices, Arruzzo notes.

About 30 employees of the store were evacuated, but the mall itself was not impacted and remained open

Officials are checking the electrical boxes, the roof, and hatchets before allowing the employees to enter the building.

Fire investigators say they tracked the problem to a dead squirrel that shorted out a main electrical supply line that feeds the store. It caused electrical motors to overheat. There was no fire.
