A second public hearing regarding the Yadkin County 2025 fiscal year budget was held Monday. At the June 13 public hearing 19 people spoke in favor of a significant pay increase for employees requested by the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office. An additional nine people spoke during Monday’s public hearing.

The proposed budget does include a 3.5 percent cost of living adjustment, effective July 1, 2024, and two percent performance increases effective January 1, 2025 for all employees.

The requested increase from the Sheriff’s Office was for a 16 percent pay raise for all Sheriff’s Office staff with the exception of five administrative positions for which an eight percent increase was requested.

The Sheriff’s Office also requested funding in the budget for four School Resource Officers. County Manager Lisa Hughes said the Yadkinville Police Department would be hiring one of those SROs for Yadkinville Elementary. No additional SRO funding was included in the proposed budget, Hughes said. She also noted that it had not been requested by the school system.

Those speaking during the June 13 meeting indicated they were in favor of the pay increase even if it meant an increase in property taxes, said Hughes.

It light of the large number of people speaking in favor of pay increases for the Sheriff’s Office, Hughes said the board decided to schedule the second public hearing to allow any additional comments to be heard. The board did not have any discussion on Monday, only listened to those who commented during the public hearing.

The board will further discuss the budget and potentially vote on its approval at a meeting planned for Wednesday in the Commissioners Chambers of the Yadkin County Human Services Building, 217 East Willow Street.
