‘I Can’t Even See Anymore!’ Obama’s Half Sister Hit with Tear Gas During Live CNN Interview Amid Deadly Kenya Protests

Dr. Auma Obama, the half-sister of former President Barack Obama, was targeted with tear gas along with other demonstrators in Kenya during a live CNN interview.

CNN’s Larry Madowo spoke with Auma Obama amid violent protests in the country, which has included police firing live rounds on protesters trying to storm Parliament following legislation called Finance Bill 2024 that includes tax hikes being passed. At least five have been killed in clashes with police and dozens more were injured.

“I’m here because look at what’s happening,” Obama told Madowo as explosions could be heard going off in the background. “Young Kenyans are demonstrating for their rights. They’re demonstrating with flags and banners.”

Obama began coughing along with the other activists around her as tear gas filled the air.

“I can’t even see anymore!” she said, coughing. “They’re being tear-gassed!”

Madowo began coughing as well as the group began moving away from the smoke before the feed was cut.

Along with the known deaths, Kenya International Amnesty has also raised alarms about the disappearance of 12 people “abducted in the middle of night” ahead of the protests.

Kenya President William Ruto has said he is looking forward to a “conversation” with protesters.

“I am very proud of our young people… they have stepped forward peaceful and I want to tell them we are going to engage them,” he said this week.

Madowo later reported both he and Obama were “struggling to breathe” after being hit with tear gas.

“She’s usually free of politics. She usually doesn’t discuss politics,” he said.

Obama is an activist and the founder of the Sauti Kuu Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping financially and socially disadvantaged children.
