How to avoid mosquito bites, per the National Pest Management Association

MADISON, Wis. -- Summer has officially arrived, and with the heat and humidity sweeping Wisconsin, so have mosquitoes. Because the pests can leave an itchy bite and transmit mosquito-borne diseases, it is important to take precaution to avoid discomfort.

The National Pest Management Association said Tuesday that certain factors can affect how likely someone is to get bitten. Some of these, such as wearing bright clothing and scented perfume, are avoidable. Other factors that may lure mosquitoes, like blood type and body temperature, are unavoidable.

The NMPA said mosquitoes are most active during dusk and dawn, so avoid the outdoors during those times. If you do spend time outside, wear dark clothing, avoid using perfume, and apply insect repellent with at least 20% DEET.

Mosquitoes can lay their eggs in as little as a half-inch of standing water. The NPMA recommends homeowners to regularly check their property for containers that could be collecting water and providing a safe area for mosquito larvae to grow.
