Los Angeles Rams: These 4 Rookies Can Steal A Starting Role At Training Camp

The Los Angeles Rams embark on another fascinating season. After making a playoff run in 2023, they now attempt to repeat their success, but this year they will have to do it with out one of their weight-bearing walls, Aaron Donald.

They will once again need their rookie class to move into starting roles and a handful can solidify that in the upcoming Rams training camp.

Two of the Rams 10 draft picks, Braden Fiske and Jared Verse, are already assumed to have staring spots. So let’s look at the others than can earn it before the season starts

Los Angeles Rams Rookies on the Rise

Blake Corum, RB

Ideally, Blake Corum and Kyren Williams will seamlessly split time in the Rams backfield. But Williams’ injury history is already rearing its ugly head. Williams missed most of the Los Angeles Rams spring practice with lingering issues in his right foot and ankle. If Williams continues to miss time, that opens the door for Corum to take the lion’s share of snaps.

Corum is a notoriously hard worker. During Ram’s training camp, if he is able to impress Sean McVay while Williams continues to nurse an injury the light may shire brightest on Corum.

Tyler Davis, DL

Four of the five spots along the Los Angeles Rams defensive line are spoken for. Verse and Bryon Young will start on the edges and Kobie Turner and Fiske at the interior spot. The final spot will be a competition between Bobby Brown, Larrell Murchison and Tyler Davis.

Neither Murchison nor Brown have cemented themselves as starters, so Tyler Davis is nearly on equal standing with these two. Hopes were high the Bobby Brown would develop into a starter after being drafed in the 4th round in 2021. He has been outdueled for a staring role twice in his career, once by Greg Gaines and just last year by Turner.

Davis will need to show he can be as good of a run defender as Brown and a better pass rusher. Davis showed his ability while at Clemson. As a true freshman he racked up 5.5 sacks and did so again as a junior, but only .5 sacks last year.

Jordan Whittington, WR

Earlyier this year, LAFB published an article based on the study by Sumer Sports of FBS wide receivers from the 2018 to 2023 season on every route run to determine route-running versatility using Shannon Entropy , which aims to provide a singular value on the predictability of the receiver’s next route.

According to their findings, Whittington’s route tree versatility grade is a 3.2. This is the 8th best among receivers drafted since 2020 and 4th best in the 2024 class. While most of the names on this list aren’t the whose-who of recently drafted WRs, most are important role players on thier respective teams.

It is easy to see why the Rams liked what they saw in Whittington when they drafted him in the 6th round. They are always attracted to great route runners and elite blockers. Whittington is both.

If he makes waves at Rams training camp, he could slide ahead of Demarcus Robinson.

Kamren Kinchens, DB

The Rams added Kamren Curl in free agency to fill the gap left by Jordan Fuller, but also to add a bruising tackler to support a young and inexperienced defensive line. Kamren Kinchens is cut from the same cloth as Curl.

His main competition for the second safety spot is Russ Yeast. Yeast has proven himself to be capable and versatile, but was a liability as a tackler. He missed 20 tackles last season, the highest rate among Rams starters. Kinchens only missed 29 in three seasons at Miami.

If he can display that he can be more stout against NFL offensive weapons at Rams training camp, he could surpass Yeast on the depth chart.
