House of the Dragon’s Tom Glynn-Carney Makes the Case for Aegon in Season 2: ‘Everyone Thinks He’s a Psychopath’

The King Aegon of House of the Dragon ‘s Season 2 premiere and the King Aegon we see in Episode 2 are very different men, thanks to the brutal murder of the ruler’s young son in Episode 1.
In a flash, Tom Glynn-Carney’s character — introduced as an easily distracted hedonist in the HBO series’ first season — became someone much more layered. Sunday’s episode, for example, found him both making game-changing political moves (however ill-advised) in his small council and weeping over the loss of little Jaehaerys. In the video above, when TVLine expresses surprise about Aegon’s degree of emotion, Glynn-Carney is ready for it: “That’s because everyone thinks he’s a psychopath,” he says. Later, he explains, “He’s way more three-dimensional than that. I think he’s complex.”

The most recent installment of the fantasy drama found Aegon demanding payback on Rhaenyra, Daemon and anyone else who had anything to do with the death of his child. The grief that fuels that drive will continue to rear its head throughout the season, Glynn-Carney previews.
“This is something that is part of him now. There’s no recovering from that,” he says. “It will fuel his decision-making and inform his choices when it comes to exacting revenge and how he does that.”
