GroveFest was held on Saturday, June 22 at Spiegel Grove, on the grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library and Museums. The annual event celebrates nature and wildlife and features hands-on activities and crafts at booths with regional nature organizations.

The event drew approximately 400 fans on a hot Saturday.

Free, guided walking tours of the grounds were available. Ice cream and hot dogs were served and donations were accepted but not required.

Someone to know: Fremont Law Director James Melle

Fremont City Law Director James Melle is not a face that most people will recognize, but last Thursday he was an integral part of the Fremont City Council meeting. I was able to ask him a few questions, so you can know who is making sure your local government is getting their job done right.

Q: Jim, can you give me your title and basic job description?

A: When you have a statutory city, which is what we have, you are the city law director. With that, you are both the prosecutor and the city attorney.

Now, can you define what that means, in practical terms?

If there are any lawsuits or a controversy that could result in a lawsuit, then I help with the situation to determine if we need to contact our insurance carrier to help handle it, or if it's something internal, like an employment issue, or something like that, so it's the civil end of it that the law director does. The prosecutor part of it is prosecuting misdemeanor cases.

Last week, you were needed at the city council meeting, which you don't always speak at. Can you explain, as an example of one of your duties, what you did and why?

I'm the legal advisor for the city , so I explained the legal ramifications of a transfer-only liquor license. That's as opposed to a new liquor license, or if they were modifying something for an existing liquor license, or a renewal. I was explaining the differences for council, so they understood. I also explained what the impact was upon the showing of no-objection to the liquor license, and that it did not mean that we were able to say that the business was eligible to operate and that it was up to a separate board, in this case, a decision of a board of public health.
