Heat waves across the US make planning a ski trip to the Southern Hemisphere seem even more appealing. While Americans boil in 100-degree temperatures, ski resorts in Chile and Argentina are experiencing their deepest start to the season in more than 20 years. More than 76 inches have fallen in the last five days and there’s more in the forecast. Ski Portillo’s Hotel will welcome guests for its 75th season this Saturday.

If you want to stay in Portillo, the only options are the properties operated by Hotel Portillo. The next closest area with accommodations is about 40 miles away in Los Andes. Staying in Portillo is often likened to staying on a cruise ship in the middle of the Andes Mountains because guests usually book 7-night ski weeks checking in and out on Wednesdays or Saturdays. Guests also have the option to book three- or four-day mini-weeks. Most of the time, you’re there with the same guests and often dine at the same tables throughout your stay, which gives it a mid-century retro vibe like the family vacation lodge from Dirty Dancing. All the accommodations are ski-in/ski-out and include hotel amenities and main dining room access.
