We all like a spacious hotel room, even when we don't plan on spending our whole vacation in the room- it's just nice to have the luxury of a little extra space. But for some ultra-luxurious travelers, just having a little extra elbow room and storage space isn't enough. They want all the space, and then some!
Lots of luxury hotels boast sizable rooms and sprawling penthouse suites. but only one of them can claim bragging rights as the biggest one of all. If you want a larger-than-life vacation in North America's largest penthouse hotel suite, you'll have to travel south of the border to the Riviera Maya - oh, and you're gonna have to fork over 40 grand a night, too.
Hey, go big or go home, right? That seems to be the philosophy behind the Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai , which, according to @thepointsguy , is the first EDITION Collection hotel to debut in Latin America . Overlooking the ocean from the Playa del Carmen, the hip new luxury hotel is big both in size and personality- and that's even before getting to their record-setting penthouse suite.
Couched in a Caribbean tropical paradise, the lush and lovely grounds of the Riviera Maya EDITION surround the hotel's sleek, minimalistic suites, which come with private outdoor spaces to soak in the surrounding scenery- and if that's not close enough for guests, they can stroll down to the beach or book a cabana right on the waterfront. There's lots to do inside the resort, though. Guests can enjoy fine dining at Ki'is, lounge at the intimate, cozy Lobby Bar, or rave till the early hours of the morning at the So'ol Beach Club - that's boutique hotel pioneer Ian Schrager flexing his Studio 54 cred for you.
But any high-end resort on the Yucatan Peninsula can offer good food, great nightlife, and blissful beachside relaxation. You're here for that super-sized, $40,000-a-night penthouse suite, so let's rap about it.
The Sky Rooftop Villa at the Riviera Maya EDITION
It doesn't get much bigger (and, let's be honest, more expensive) than the Riviera Maya EDITION's Sky Rooftop Villa . It earns its claim to fame with 27,000 sprawling square feet of space. And sure, it's ultra-pricey - as The Points Guy reported, its starting rate is $40,000 a night - but at least you can split the bill a few ways. With five bedrooms and six beds in total (4 kings, 2 queens), the Sky Rooftop Villa can accommodate up to 10 guests at a time.
So what do you and your nine other guests get with your penthouse suite? Quite a lot. Each bedroom has its own private terrace and plunge pool, and there's also a main deck with perfectly-manicured landscaping, lounging areas, and a mid-Olympic sized infinity pool . Inside, guests can unwind in the rainforest showers and soaking tubs in their marble bathrooms and whip up something to eat in the guest kitchen- or, y'know, just walk downstairs and enjoy the hotel's fine dining.
If $40,000+ per night is still too rich for your blood (even when split 10 ways), don't worry. The Riviera Maya EDITION has more modest rooms that still boast attractive modern interiors and stunning views of the nearby ocean and mangrove trees. Looking at their availability over the next few months, I saw rooms going for less than $500 a night. Pricey, but not preposterous by luxury hotel standards.
The Sky Rooftop Villa impresses as the biggest penthouse hotel suite in North America, but you don't have to spend five figures a night to enjoy the Rivieria Maya EDITION. The whole place is a luxurious tropical paradise from top to bottom!
