DORRANCE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An annual golf tournament was held Tuesday morning to help raise funding for mental health awareness.

The sixth Annual 811 Golf Tournament was held at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club.

811 is the number available to call if someone is going to be digging using heavy machinery.

By calling this service, they can tell you information on where utility lines are located.

Each year they benefit a different charity.

Lackawanna County awarded $100K in grants

This year the charity benefited is the John Malvizzi Foundation.

Founded by Bobby and Nina Judge after John Malvizzi took his own life in 2021, the foundation helps those who are struggling with mental health issues.

“It affects all of us. Whether you’re diagnosed with it, or whether somebody you know is diagnosed with it,” John Malvizzi Foundation Board Member Joe Jones said.

“We really want to be able to provide resources for families and communities to help reduce that stigma, and increase quality of life,” Bobby explained.

UGI and Bloodhound Underground Utility put Tuesday’s golf tournament on.

The foundation holds its own every year in September as another way to help raise funding to reach the community better and further grow the organization.
