Suspect in Holly Bobo's murder sentenced to over 20 years on firearm offenses

JACKSON, Tenn. - Jason Autry, a 16-time convicted felon, was in possession of a rifle, a handgun and ammunition in December 2020, according to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ said that Autry pled guilty to three counts of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. He was sentenced to 279 months in federal prison on Tuesday. There is no parole in the federal prison system.

Prosecutors claim Autry had only been out of prison for 25 days when he possessed the weapons, one of which was stolen.

Autry has previously been convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm on January 15, 2012. He was released to the federal supervised release term of three years on September 16, 2020, the same day his eight-year sentence for solicitation of first-degree murder and facilitation of aggravated kidnapping ended. Those charges stemmed from his role in the kidnapping and murder of Bobo on April 13, 2011, according to the DOJ. Bobo's body was discovered three years later.

On December 3, 2020, prosecutors said Autry was in possession of a Smith and Wesson, Model M&P shield and a stolen 9 mm caliber pistol. He was also in possession of a Marlin, 30-30 caliber rifle and ammunition within 78 days of his release, the DOJ said.

FILE - Jason Autry identifies Zachery Adams during his testimony on day four of Adams' murder trial on Sept. 14, 2017, in Savannah, Tenn. Autry, a convicted felon who was released from prison after giving key trial testimony about the slaying of Tennessee nursing student Holly Bobo, plans to change his plea to guilty on weapons charges filed shortly after he was granted his freedom, according to an Oct. 3, 2022, court filing obtained by The Associated Press. Court documents show that Autry, star trial witness in the killing of Holly Bobo, a 20-year-old nursing student who disappeared from her rural Tennessee home in 2011, is recanting his testimony.
