DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The Darlington County Humane Society is making a desperate plea for help amid a major overcrowding crisis.

The shelter has been given the green light to open a new facility in the fall, but the current occupancy numbers have put it in a perilous state.

“The new facility will not have more kennels but promises to provide better conditions and cleaner spaces for the animals,” manager Lindsay Cronin said. “Currently, we have double the capacity of dogs and cats we can accommodate. As long as we are short of kennels, we will remain at Code Red.”

Cronin emphasized that there are several ways the community can help.

“Not only is it finding ways to rehome your animals if you can’t keep them, but we can also provide resources for people. We would rather animals stay with the people they belong to, and there’s ways we can help with food and getting them spayed and neutered,” she said.

The humane society is hosting an adoption event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
