Wyoming Area School Board approves final 2024-2025 budget with 6.50% tax increase

EXETER — Wyoming Area School Board during a lengthy meeting Tuesday approved a final budget for the 2024-2025 school year with expenditures of $47,783,389 and a tax increase of 6.5%.

That increase reflects a millage of 21.0533 for Luzerne County and 105.4852 for Wyoming County.

A mill is a $1 tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value.

The owner of a $100,000 Luzerne County property in the Wyoming Area School District pays $1,977 in school real estate taxes under the current millage rate. The increase to 21.0533 mills raises that amount to $2,105.

That increase is down from the 7.2% tax increase that was initially proposed in May.

Business Consultant Tom Melone gave a number of reasons for the tax increase, including a continued increase in Cyber Charter School tuition, as well as declining assessed property values and health insurance costs.
