New toll road scam could impact thousands in the Upstate, BBB warns

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Anyone who has done any driving recently could receive a message about unpaid toll road fees. The Better Business Bureau is now warning this could be a scam.

The Better Business Bureau told 7NEWS they’ve received at least three reports in the last couple of weeks from Upstate residents who said they received text messages and invoices in the mail stating they had unpaid toll road fees.

President and CEO of The Better Business Bureau Hunter Jones said this is a new method scammers are using.

“Consumers need to make sure that they’re being patient. Especially if they’re getting a strange, unsolicited text message, do not click on that link, and do not reply to that text message,” said Jones.

He said scammers are pretending to be representatives of Florida SunPass and other government agencies, messaging people they’ll face fines of fifty dollars or more if they don’t immediately pay the toll road fees.

Jones urges everyone to do their due diligence to avoid becoming a victim.

“Start checking out that contact information that is on that text message or that is on that letter you got in the mail – see if that’s the real website. Do a quick search on Google, and see if it’s the same website that the government has for these types of toll roads,” said Jones.

Jones encourages everyone this scam might have targeted to report it directly to the Better Business Bureau or the FBI’s Internet crimes website .
