GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Michigan woman will spend at least 35 years in prison for intentionally setting fire to a home that killed her boyfriend and his two dogs.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office announced Tuesday that, in exchange for a sentencing agreement between 35 and 60 years in prison, 43-year-old Hope Snyder pled no contest to several charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree arson and two counts of killing or torturing an animal in the second degree.

Snyder had faced charges of first-degree murder and arson. A conviction of first-degree murder comes with an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole, which she avoids as part of the agreement.

The AG’s Office says Snyder killed the victim and the two dogs on Nov. 22, 2021, by setting fire to his home in Mason County while he slept.

Messages from Snyder sent by text and through Facebook reveal that the two had gotten in a fight and that Snyder had planned to steal the man’s truck and money and burn down his house.

It appears she did just that. After setting the fire, Snyder fled to the east side of the state in the victim’s truck and was arrested at Detroit Metro Airport.

Dana Nessel’s team credits a thorough investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and arson investigators from the Michigan State Police for securing justice.

“This plea agreement ensures Ms. Snyder will face significant consequences for her unconscionable crimes,” Nessel said in a statement . “I commend the diligent efforts of Michigan State Police and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, who worked tirelessly to bring justice to the victim, his family and his beloved pets.”
