Kevin Costner can't stop casting his own children in Horizon: An American Saga. For some reason, that has people all up in arms. But may I remind you that the 69-year-old actor has personally financed this movie franchise - to the tune of $38 million - so in a way, doesn't he have the right to do whatever he wants with them? Kevin Costner’s passion project finally hits theaters on June 28, with the second part following a couple months later on August 16. The set of films have the potential to be summer blockbusters, though the reviews for the film aren’t all that great. You might not trust Rotten Tomatoes, but if you do, they currently have the first movie at 43%. Granted, these are “movie critics” and who really cares what any of them think? Once the movie hits theaters and receives a Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score… then we’ll talk. Regardless of how the film turns out (and the three supposedly coming afterwards),
Kevin Costner casting his own son Hayes in the first installment has caused quite the stir. Hayes, the 15-year-old son of Costner and his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner, is making his acting debut in the film as he’s set to play the younger version of the character his father plays in the film. Earlier this year, the Field of Dreams actor told People that choosing to cast his son in the role was as intentional as it gets: “I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me. And the same thing for Cayden, same thing for Grace. I’m like any other parent. I’m trying to figure out, like, ‘This is really neat. You should come be with me.’”
From Costner's perspective, casting his own kin is a sweet (but forced) way to spend quality time with them. From an outside perspective, it looks a whole lot like nepotism , which is why so many people have been upset about Hayes getting the small role in the movie. And guess what? Those people that are peeved off are going to become even more irate when they learn that Costner doubled down on casting his kids. He revealed in an interview with Fox News Digital that his oldest son, Joe Costner, will appear in the second installment of Horizon: An American Saga. Costner has a total of seven children, and as he explained, there's no hard feelings when he casts one of them and not the other:
"They're all supportive of each other. My oldest son was in a scene in chapter two, and, a small part again. I just try to find ways to trap them." Ways to trap them, huh? There's probably a better way to say that, but it's a good thing that all the internet trolls will probably overlook that quote since they'll be boiling with rage because another Costner family member is included in the legendary actor's passion project. How could Kevin Costner be so selfish ? (that's sarcasm by the way, he's paying for most, if not all, of the Horizon franchise). Honestly, these are pretty small roles and it sounds like he's just a dad who just wants to spend a little time with his teenage kids... can't blame the man. Horizon: An American Saga drops this weekend, June 28th. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5yOSu4R2ts
