Illinois’ tax rates for gasoline and diesel fuel will increase Monday as the Land of Lincoln enters a new fiscal year. The state’s gas tax is already higher than Missouri’s and many other states’.

The Illinois gas tax will increase from $0.454 per gallon to $0.47 , while the diesel tax will spike from $0.529 to $0.545 per gallon, according to the state’s department of revenue. The tax has regularly increased over recent years.

Illinois state taxes on gas include the newly raised $0.47 per gallon motor fuel tax, as well as a motor fuel use tax, which will increase to $0.666 per gallon Monday from $0.65. An environmental impact fee of $0.008 and underground storage tank tax of $0.003 per gallon also apply.

In addition to the state taxes, Illinois residents pay a federal tax of 18.3 cents per gallon , plus a 0.1 cent per gallon U.S. leaking underground storage tank fee.

While the tax is set to increase soon, Illinois residents have seen some relief in gas prices compared to this time last year. The average cost of gas per gallon in the state is $3.885, down from $3.979 a year ago, according to auto club AAA.

The Land of Lincoln has a higher average gas price than the U.S. as a whole, but St. Clair County’s gas prices are cheaper than the state’s average. The AAA national gas average is $3.494 as of Wednesday, while St. Clair County’s is $3.728.

“Gasoline demand has trailed 2023 for most of this year, and analysts believe economic uncertainty may suppress demand this summer,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a June 13 press release.

How to save money on gas in Illinois

One of the most straightforward ways to save on gas is to drive less and use public transportation and walk more , but this isn’t an option for all metro-east residents all the time.

AAA offers an online tool where you can search for gas stations along your route, including pricing. GasBuddy is another option, offering an app to search for cheaper gas and a U.S. gas price map .

Upside offers cash back on gas purchases , as well as a map to locate the most affordable locations near you.

More money-saving tips to consider include using any cash-back offers your credit card company may have, checking if your company reimburses you for work trips, downloading gas station apps for offers and buying your gas with cash.
