Constellation releases 2024 Sustainability Report

Carbon-free energy producer Constellation released its 2024 Sustainability Report Tuesday, focusing on the company’s move to help America transition to a carbon-free energy future.

In the report, the company outlined its progress in leading the clean energy transition by providing emission-free energy. The company has the nation’s largest zero-emissions nuclear fleet and provides clean energy to the grid by seeking license extensions for existing plants and installing new equipment to increase its output, officials said.

“Leading America’s clean energy transition and reliably meeting our nation’s growing energy needs for everything from transportation and heavy industry to the booming data economy is an enormous responsibility,” said Joe Dominguez, president and CEO of Constellation. “That’s why we’re focused on helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals, advocating for sound policies to advance the clean energy transition, and ensuring Americans of all backgrounds benefit from our investments in workforce development, philanthropy, and small and diverse businesses across the communities we serve.”

Officials said funding through the Inflation Reduction Act helped to stabilize the nuclear energy industry and laid the groundwork for continued investments into the existing nuclear fleet.

According to the report, the company produced 178 terawatt hours of clean, carbon-free electricity in 2023, enough to power 16 million homes while avoiding 125 million metric tons of carbon emissions. The company also said it plans to invest $800 million in new equipment to increase the output of its Braidwood and Byron nuclear plant in Illinois, increasing their capacity by 158 megawatts. Together with other projects at other plants, the additional capacity could add up to one gigawatt of clean energy power over the next 10 years.
