    21-year-old man killed in crash during pursuit in Clarke County

    CLARKE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 21-year-old man is dead after police say he crashed his car during a pursuit in Clarke County Monday night.

    According to Virginia State Police, the crash took place at around 9:51 p.m. on Monday, June 24 on Kimble Road.

    According to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was monitoring drivers’ speed on Harry Byrd Highway near Bee Line Lane on Monday night when he saw the driver of a 2014 Hyundai Sonata going 82 miles per hour in a 55 miles her hour zone.

    The deputy began a pursuit and the driver turned onto Kimble Road while running a stop sign. The deputy continued to follow the driver, who reached speeds of 115 miles per hour.

    According to Virginia State Police, the driver, identified as 21-year-old Zachery Smallwood of the Berryville area, failed to maneuver a curve on Kimble Road and drove off the left side, striking several trees and a power pole guide wire.

    Smallwood was pronounced dead at the scene, he was not wearing a seatbelt.
