Everything you need to know about Indy's fireworks rules + regulations

Independence Day is next week, and skies across the nation will soon be lit up by beautiful firework displays. But if you’re planning on orchestrating your own show, there are some rules in place to keep you and your neighbors safe (and able to get a good night’s sleep).

Here’s when Indiana state law permits you to set off fireworks:

• June 29-July 3 from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset (roughly 11:15 p.m.)
• July 4 from 10 a.m. to midnight
• July 5-9 from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset

If you observe someone setting off fireworks outside the legal times, you can call your local police department’s non-emergency number (dial 311 on a cell phone).

Keep in mind that certain kinds of fireworks , including cherry bombs and silver salutes, are illegal. You can also spot fireworks that are being sold illegally by some key packaging giveaways, such as fireworks wrapped in brown paper or boxes without graphics or markings, instead of cellophane.

Fines for violating fireworks laws range from $500 for a minor using fireworks without an adult present to $10,000 for causing personal injury to someone else using a firework. Our friends at WTHR have some tips to keep you safe while using fireworks.
