Same lucky numbers made thousands winners in SC lottery. Now comes $4.7 million payout

A set of numbers proved to be a lucky combination — resulting in thousands of South Carolina lottery wins on the same night.

Players bought more than 2,300 winning tickets for the Pick 4 game , which allows people to choose any combination of four numbers or have a machine pick them at random.

The winners’ tickets all had the numbers 4-4-4-4. That same combination — along with Fireball number 4 — was picked in a drawing Tuesday, June 25, the S.C. Education Lottery wrote on its website and in a news release.

Now, lottery officials are set to give out more than $4.7 million in prizes. Lucky ticket holders can claim their prizes by mail or at the claims center in Columbia . But winners who choose the latter option are warned that it may take time to cash in.

“Because of the large number of winners, visitors at the claims center should expect a long wait in the heat on Wednesday and delays the rest of the week,” officials wrote. “Updates on wait times will be posted at sceducationlottery.com and on the lottery’s social media channels.”

Pick 4 ticket prices start at 50 cents. Depending on how much money players spent and whether they chose the Fireball option, each winning ticket is now worth $2,500 to $5,400.

The drawing marked the second time that the 4-4-4-4 combination was picked in the South Carolina lottery game. So, how does this seven-figure payout compare to the previous one?

“The record Pick 4 payout was more than $8.3 million set on Friday, January 26, 2024, when 3,351 winning straight plays won with 4-4-4-4,” spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News in an email.

The odds of winning a Pick 4 prize on a straight play — choosing the numbers in the order they’re drawn — are 1 in 10,000, officials said.
