Legal Correspondent Suggests Trump Immunity Decision Might Be Unanimous on MSNBC: It’s ‘Not Just About Trump’

NBC News senior legal correspondent Laura Jarrett poured cold water on the conspiracy theories surrounding the Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision in former President Donald Trump’s presidential immunity case on MSNBC Wednesday, providing an alternative explanation for the fact that the Court has not yet released its opinion.

After noting that the Court has saved several — and some of its biggest decisions — for the very end of the term and is “creeping up on their summer vacation,” Jarrett weighed in on why it may be taking its time.

“They’re not done, they’re just, they still have more work to do,” suggested Jarrett. “And I think, especially on the issue of presidential immunity as it relates to former President Trump, I can imagine that they’re trading those drafts, the clerks are working away. And you can understand on something like that where they’re writing a decision not just about Trump, but for all presidents going forward. They want to have as close to unanimity as possible, right?

“And so they want to have an unsigned per curiam order where you see as many of those justices as possible without a bunch of dissents. So they may not be able to get that depending on what it is, but it’s what we saw in the Colorado ballot case . And I can see a situation which they’re trying to have as narrow ruling as possible to get as many people to sign on to it,” she added.

While CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig has concurred with that analysis and even argued that the case is moving at “lightning speed,” more overtly progressive commentators have, without evidence, argued that the case is being delayed to benefit Trump.

“In realistic terms, he’s already got immunity because they’ve already delayed things so long that the stuff that he did in 2020, he’s not going to be tried for before he potentially gets back in the White House and then once he’s back in the White House, all those cases go away,” declared MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on The View earlier this month.
