While he didn’t take the victory, he sure proved his toughness until the very end. A video of a groundhog and bobcat fighting came up on my feed today and I immediately assumed it would be yet another impressive display of skill from the bobcat. There’s no shortage of impressive feats these small but mighty cats have accomplished, from taking out rattlesnakes
to clearing huge gaps over water. Groundhogs, on the other hand, are notably less impressive… While bobcats certainly aren’t too large, clocking in at up to 30 pounds, ground hogs weigh up to 13 pounds, so less than half. They’re pretty cute, but that’s pretty much it on my groundhog knowledge, other than they tend to bury themselves underneath sheds and then the holiday thing they got in February… So before watching this video I would have bet the house that it would be a no effort, clear round 1 finish for the bobcat. But this groundhog had something to prove. Maybe he was sick of being made fun of all these years. Sick of being nothing more than dinner for some coyotes, bobcats, and bears. This guy gave it his absolute all, hissing and biting and jumping toward the bobcat, getting in a shot or two and rolling with the shots of the bobcat. A truly valiant effort that will not be forgotten soon. But alas, even this brave little soul was no match for what’s quickly growing into one of my favorite animals. The bobcat was eventually able to get a bite on the groundhog’s neck and it was game over for our underdog. RIP to a brave one. Your actions will inspire generations of groundhogs to stand their ground. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CfeWnZmqtbQ/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=ce30bf84-b574-47bd-96f4-1c5e55e20b93
