SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The Woodbury County Democratic Party has announced their candidate for the 3rd District Supervisor seat.

Woodbury County Democrats announced Wednesday morning that Brian McNaughton will be running for Woodbury County Supervisor.

McNaughton has run for the position before but as a Republican.

“I initially ran for the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors because I feel so strongly about the mismanagement of the Jail and other irresponsible spending decisions of the current board. I ran as a Republican – frankly – as a matter of family history. As the campaign went on, I realized the Republican Party in which I grew up no longer existed. So I am happy to say I have joined the party of true fiscal responsibility and small government – the Democratic Party of Iowa!,” states McNaughton.

McNaughton will be facing off against Mark Nelson in a rematch later this year after l osing to him in the Republican Primary.

The Woodbury County Republican Party released a statement on Brian McNaughton’s candidacy as a Democrat.

“In a desperate and tone deaf political stunt, amid the backdrop of a major flood emergency, Brian McNaughton and the Woodbury County Democratic Party are playing politics yet again.

‘The Woodbury County Democrats did not have a candidate on the primary election ballot for the rural area making up Supervisor District 3.  Instead, they have had to resort to finding a Republican willing to switch parties after several failed attempts to secure the Republican nomination for the seat.  While we respect Mr. McNaughton’s prior work in local government, it is clear he is driven by personal ambition and not by principle’, said Woodbury County Republican chair Robert Henderson.

McNaughton’s unquenchable quest for elected office should be met with skepticism and distrust by the delegates to the upcoming Woodbury County Democratic Party nominating convention.

Though reasonable Democrats still exist, McNaughton and the Woodbury County Democrats who concocted this plan are not among them.

District 3 Republican Supervisor and candidate Mark Nelson is unavailable for comment on his opponent because he is tied up helping his constituents in Anthon and Correctionville.”
