MORGANTOWN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A new program being launched under the Healthy Food Financing Initiative by USDA Rural Development and the Reinvestment Fund stands to increase access to meal options in limited-access communities throughout West Virginia.

Through the program, retailers and food retail suppliers can apply for $60 million in grants, loans, and technical assistance. This would be offered through the Food Access and Retail Expansion Fund.

“Access to fresh, healthy food is something that no one, no matter where they live, should have to struggle with,” said Ryan Thorn, USDA RD WV State Director. “This program helps increase access to healthy foods, opens new market opportunities for West Virginia farmers, stabilizes small and independent retailers, and creates good paying jobs and economic opportunity in low-income communities.”

Loans in the amount of $500,000 to $5 million are available for activities such as the acquisition of land, predevelopment, equipment purchases, and renovations. Project management, equipment purchase, and construction grants are available up to $250,000.

Also offered through the program is financing to support market and feasibility studies, store design for projects in early stages, and business planning.

The FARE fund will remain available for the next five-year period and has been made possible by the American Rescue Plan Act. Assistance through these programs provides support for business development, infrastructure improvement, community facilities like schools, and health care among other things.

Those interested may inquire with regard to their eligibility at the fare fund website .
