Jennifer Lopez isn’t letting her personal life dictate what is happening in her professional life. The 54-year-old superstar might be taking a play from Reese Witherspoon’s playbook by buying up the rights to a book and giving it a small-screen adaptation.

Her successful partnership with Netflix is moving forward with the adaptation of Emily Henry’s young adult book, Happy Place , according to Deadline. The TV series will be produced by Lopez’s production company, Nuyorican Productions, and the outlet noted that pre-production with the writers has already begun. The story follows “a couple, who broke up months ago, pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends,” per Amazon. It could be another golden chapter for Lopez and Netflix, which recently celebrated another win with Atlas on the heels of her 2023 film, The Mother.

While Lopez doesn’t have a book club like Witherspoon, the model of adapting books for TV and film has become a winner for many female stars and producers in Hollywood — it puts them in charge of their entertainment industry destiny. Witherspoon shared that it was ageism that pushed her in this direction. “When I was about 34, I stopped reading interesting scripts,” she admitted. “When there’s a big economic shift in the media business, it’s not the superhero movies or independent films we lose out on,” she told The New York Times. “It’s the middle, which is usually where women live. The family drama. The romantic comedy. So, I decided to fund a company to make those kinds of movies.”

Lopez hit an obstacle this year with her music career, but her acting and producing career is thriving. Simu Liu, her Atlas co-star, had high praise for her producing efforts. “If I could just end on one thing,” he gushed during the movie’s May press tour in Mexico City. “Jen is a producer on this movie and the reason why I am here, and why Sterling [K. Brown] was in this beautiful movie, is because Jen cares. And Jen cares about things like representation and diversity, and she’s a boss.”

Fans should get ready for Lopez to settle in for a long-term relationship with Netflix because they’ve proven that they like being in business with her — and she’s driving more eyeballs to their network. It’s a big win for J.Lo!
