Need something simple but renter-friendly to spice up the look of your kitchen? You might not think adding tile backsplash to your kitchen walls falls in that category, but with this simple hack from TikTok creator Shelby Turner , it could be the next thing on your list.

I’m loving the way these peel and stick tiles turned out. Should i put disco squares over the outlet covers too? #apartmentdecor #kitchenmakeover #renterfriendly

Adding tile to your kitchen backsplash is typically thought of as a drawn-out chore, though it is well worth the new look (in most cases). It is also anything BUT renter-friendly . If you’re renting, the thought of changing up the look of the walls can be a major deterrent. But fear not, this method is a game-changer for renters who want to add a personal touch to their kitchens without worrying about damaging the walls or losing their security deposit.

First, lay down strips of painter's tape on your wall, making sure you cover everywhere that the new backsplash is going to go. This is important as it creates a barrier between the wall and the tile, preventing any potential damage. Next, place your tiles on top. Shelby went with a peel-and-stick tile originally, which makes the process easier in and of itself. Peel-and-stick tiles are user-friendly and provide a clean, professional finish without the mess of traditional tiling materials. This way, if you ever need to peel it off, you won't damage anything beneath it as the tile will just come right off with the tape! It’s as easy as pie and just as satisfying.

Now, Shelby did say that she ran her painter's tape all the way down, which left a bit of blue around the edges. This is a minor hiccup that can be easily fixed. You can caulk all around the edges to cover up any exposed tape, giving the finish a seamless look. However, do make sure this caulking is something you will be able to peel up as necessary to maintain the renter-friendly aspect of this hack. Alternatively, you could simply measure the tape or the tile to ensure both fit perfectly in the space. Precise measurements will save you from any additional steps and help achieve that flawless look.

This hack is not only renter-friendly but also budget-friendly. Painter's tape and peel-and-stick tiles are relatively inexpensive compared to traditional tiling supplies. Plus, the ease of application means you can complete the project in a fraction of the time it would take using conventional methods. This DIY approach allows you to personalize your space with minimal investment, making it perfect for those who love to experiment with home décor without the long-term commitment.
