Lanterns Series to Premiere on HBO

The Green Lantern show has got the go-ahead.

Officially called Lanterns , DC’s superhero series is set to air on HBO. Over eight episodes, we’ll follow cops John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder in the heartland of America.

They’re not just any cops, however. They’re intergalactic cops belonging to a peacekeeping force known as the Green Lanterns. Green Lanterns fight evil using special rings that harness willpower to conjure basically anything they can imagine. It’s the first time we’ve seen them in live-action since 2011’s Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds.

It’s also not just any old murder, either. This one is said to involve an ancient horror that only a superhero can solve. If it sounds a bit like True Detective , there’s a reason for that.Chris Mundy ( True Detective: Night Country, Ozark ), is the showrunner on Lanterns , while Damon Lindelof ( Watchmen, Lost ) serves as co-producer and co-writer.

“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm,” say DC co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman .”
