Jared McCain made a name for himself after excelling on the court for Duke as a freshman and is all set to have his name called at the 2024 NBA Draft. A striking feature when it comes to McCain is his painted nails and in a recent interview, he was asked when was the first time he painted them.
"It was the beginning of COVID," McCain said. "I saw Jordan Clarkson do it and I decided to give it a try. The first color was lavender. It was the one I found in my mom's kit."
Jordan Clarkson has indeed been painting his nails for years now and he wished McCain the best of luck for the draft in response to this video.
"Goodluck gang!!"
McCain has painted his nails black for the draft, as he felt it goes with his suit. He also revealed that after the draft, he might be on the lookout for an artist who could draw a logo or something along those lines.
While McCain has unsurprisingly received some backlash for painting his nails, it isn't something he plans on discontinuing. The 20-year-old signed a NIL deal with American beauty brand Sally Hansen earlier this year and in the announcement video, made it crystal clear he was going to be himself and was sorry if it offended anyone.
"Everybody should do self-care," McCain said . "For me, it's nail painting. I'm sorry if that offends any of you guys. My favorite nail polish to use is the Sally Hansen Insta-Dri because it only takes 60 seconds to dry. There's no crazy reason I (paint my nails). It helps me not bite my nails. I went to a salon one time, picked out a color, and thought it looked nice. A lot of people disagree and don't like it, but I'm going to be myself and do what I think looks nice."
I don't think there's anything wrong with that either. It's a shame that McCain has been criticized for something as harmless as painting his nails, but things like that remain somewhat of a taboo for men.
Whether you like it or not, the painted nails certainly aren't hurting McCain on the court. He averaged 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in the 2023-24 campaign for Duke. He also shot 46.2% from the field and 41.4% from beyond the arc.
McCain's exploits have led to him being regarded as a fringe lottery pick and there appears to be a good chance he goes in that 13-18 range in the draft. Teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers certainly could do with having a shooter like him onboard.
Dwyane Wade Has Been Getting His Nails Painted Since 2007
Long before Clarkson and McCain thought about painting their nails, NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade started doing it. Wade revealed he has been getting his nails painted since 2007.
“My father has always been a man who would take care of himself. My uncles took care of themselves. I always knew that’s what I wanted to do: I wanted to be one of them sharp-dressed men who smelled good, who stayed clean-shaved, and all that.” So Wade has always done the same: massages, facials, nail appointments. “I’ve been getting my nails painted since 2007,” Wade said, via Clay Skipper.
Like McCain, Wade was criticized when he revealed this to the world. He has developed thick skin over the years, though, and isn't bothered by any of it.
I, for one, wouldn't be surprised to see more and more athletes walk around with painted nails in the coming years. Caleb Williams, the first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, paints his nails too and it might one day become somewhat common.
