    Good morning, Ottawa County.

Yesterday's storms should have cleared out the heat and humidity, at least for a day. The high is expected to be 72 degrees and the low a mere 64 degrees, with generally clear skies.

Local teens and Hayes Presidential museum staff team up for new exhibits

The Hayes Presidential Library and the Teen Museum Council opened their new exhibit Thursday. The council joined the Fremont chapter of the NAACP to open the exhibit for the Juneteenth federal holiday.

Juneteenth events took place over the past weekend at the Hayes Presidential and the Teen Museum Council students shared their projects.

Teen Museum Council is a new program at Hayes Presidential that invites students from area high schools to meet monthly and learn about the museum field.

Kale John, 16, and Micah Wonderly, 16, both are juniors at Oak Harbor High School, created an exhibit, with a hands-on component, about the music and instruments of the Civil War. They chose the subject matter because they are both band students. Kale is a percussionist and Micah plays saxophone.

Both Kale and Micah were surprised to learn how young many of the soldiers were.

“It says right here,” Kale said, pointing to one of the displays they created, “most of them were 12 to 16-years-old.”

“It is very interesting, boys younger than we are, they were doing this, fighting the war and playing instruments walking into battle,” Micah added.

Read about the other exhibits students created and see the photos. These kids all have a love of history, and promising careers with museums, should they choose that route.
