CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – If you’ve had trouble sleeping due to the warm and muggy nights you’re not alone and chances are there are going to be more nights like that this summer.

WEATHER ALERT: Heavy rain and thunderstorms Wednesday

According to Climate Central, summer nighttime temperatures across the U.S. have warmed nearly twice as fast as summer daytime highs since records began in 1985. This has led to an increase in the number of combined hot summer days and nights across the country. They found that in 230 U.S. locations, summer nights have warmed by three degrees on average. Recently there has been some pretty warm summer nights here in western Massachusetts.

“Usually you can leave your windows open at night but now because of the mugginess, it’s impossible because you know it’s just too muggy to do that so being unable to open your windows and get some fresh air is a change for us also,” said Agawam resident Carol Potvin.

Lack of sleep during those warm and muggy nights can prolong heat stress and lead to other related health risks during the hottest time of the year.

The 22News Storm Team is predicting that the end of the week will have a bit of a break from those warm muggy nights.
