    Fridley's Blum sets Luther strikeout record, area graduates excel in spring college seasons

    Some of the area highlights and achievements for area graduates in the 2024 spring college season:

    Fridley’s Harry Blum, a senior pitcher for Luther baseball, was named All-American Rivers Conference. Blum worked a team-high 78 1/3 innings for the 28-16 Norse, going 7-3 with a 3.91 ERA. Blum set a single-season school record for strikeouts this season with 84, and finished second all-time with 219.

    Anoka’s Madison Spah, a junior outfielder for St. Cloud State softball, scored eight runs and stole five bases in 12 starts for the Huskies. Columbia Heights’ Molly Gross, a junior pitcher for St. Cloud State, went 3-2 and struck out 21 batters in 41 innings.

    Andover’s Nate Bauer, a senior for St. John’s University men’s golf, earned 17th in the Johnnies’ final home meet, and Totino-Grace’s Nate Appelhof, a freshman for St. John’s, earned 20th. The Johnnies finished the season 12th in the NCAA Division III Championships.

    Anoka’s Allison Hookum, a sophomore for Augsburg women’s track and field, earned fourth in the MIAC 800.

    Andover’s Julia Babineau, a first-year for College of St. Benedict women’s track and field, earned 26th in the MIAC 5,000.

    Coon Rapids’ Grace Hannula, a senior midfielder for Wisconsin River Falls women’s lacrosse, and Coon Rapids’ Lilah Gilyard, a sophomore on defense for Wisconsin River Falls women’s lacrosse, were both named All-WIAC Honorable Mention. Hannula had 34 goals and eight assists on the season, and Gilyard had 34 ground balls as the Falcons went 12-7 on the year.

    Andover’s Emma Tammi, a freshman on defense for Wisconsin Eau Claire women’s lacrosse, had 25 ground balls for the Blugolds, who went 12-5.

    Andover’s Noah Dagostino, a sophomore infielder for Wisconsin Superior baseball, hit .304 with 29 runs and 21 stolen bases for the 22-19 Yellowjackets. Anoka’s Will Czech, a freshman for Wisconsin Superior, hit .333 in 15 appearances.

    Anoka’s Brooklyn Jones, a freshman for University of Minnesota softball, made 13 appearances for the 28-25, including a walk-off grand slam against Ohio State April 6.

    Andover’s Kyle Law, a sophomore for North Dakota State baseball, reached base at a .368 clip with 10 RBIs and nine runs scored in 16 starts.

    Andover’s Maddie Bottineau, a junior pitcher for Northwestern St. Paul softball, had a 5-4 record and 3.34 ERA in 44 innings and was named All-UMAC Honorable Mention. Blaine’s Allison Terry, a sophomore outfielder for Northwestern St. Paul, collected 24 hits and 18 runs in 16 starts for the 22-17 Eagles. Blaine’s Emma Edwards, a freshman pitcher for Northwestern St. Paul, picked up a pair of wins in five appearances, and Spring Lake Park’s Jenna Nusbaum, a sophomore pitcher for Northwestern St. Paul, had a 4.90 ERA in eight appearances.

    Legacy Christian Academy’s Taaron Rudzitis, a sophomore for Bethel men’s track and field, was part of the Royals’ MIAC champion 4x400 relay, earning All-MIAC honors and helping lead Bethel to the team title. Andover’s Caleb Ketterling, a freshman for Bethel men’s track and field, earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention with a sixth-place finish in the 400.

    Blaine’s Jack Puder, a senior infielder for Minnesota Duluth baseball, hit .354 with a team-leading 10 home runs and 46 RBIs for the Bulldogs. Blaine’s Garrett Stauffacher, a freshman outfielder for UMD, reached base at a .391 clip, scoring 14 runs in 15 starts. Totino-Grace’s Chad Fox, a senior pitcher for UMD, was one of three starters to make 10 starts for the Bulldogs, striking out 39 batters in 49 2/3 innings. Blaine’s Dylan Wilson, a senior pitcher for UMD, struck out eight batters in 14 1/3 innings of relief.

    Blaine’s Madison Schmidt, a junior for Notre Dame women’s track and field, was the ACC champion in the high jump with a height of 5-11 1/2.

    Blaine’s Benny McDonald, a first-year for Gustavus baseball, was named All-MIAC Honorable Mention, posting a 3.03 ERA and striking out 30 batters in 32 2/3 innings. Totino-Grace’s Luke Siegle, a junior for Gustavus, went 5-3 and struck out 41 batters in 37 2/3 innings. Columbia Heights’ Isaac Becker, a junior for Gustavus, drove in 16 runs and scored 11 in 25 games, as the Gusties went 23-16.

    Spring Lake Park’s Jack Wellen, a junior for Bethel men’s golf, was named All-MIAC. Wellen had four top-five finishes in 10 events, and had a 73.9 scoring average that ranked seventh in the MIAC.

    Coon Rapids’ Rumeal Setts, a senior for Hamline men’s tennis, was named All-MIAC, going 15-3 in doubles play.

    Blaine’s Bryce Nelson, a senior for Concordia St. Paul baseball, hit .354 and scored 22 runs in 26 starts for the 29-22 Golden Bears.

    Anoka’s Sofia Condon, a freshman for University of Minnesota women’s track and field, reached the NCAA West Regional in the pole vault, and went on to finish 33rd. Condon also earned 12th at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships with a height of 13-0 1/4.

    Blaine’s Sean Oslund, a freshman for Wartburg men’s tennis, was named All-American Rivers Conference. Oslund went 5-2 in conference play and 16-12 overall in singles action, and 4-3 in doubles in conference play.

    Blaine’s Shalom Sulungaine, a freshman for Bethel women’s track and field, was the MIAC runner-up in the 400, and part of the Royals’ MIAC champion 4x400 relay. Legacy Christian’s Reanna Cruz, a freshman for Bethel, earned 11th in the MIAC 400. Legacy Christian’s Larissa Minshull, a junior for Bethel, earned 26th in the MIAC 400.

    Blaine’s Mikey Gottschalk, a senior for St. Thomas baseball, had a .409 on-base percentage and scored 35 runs, starting all 46 games for the Tommies.

    Blaine’s Kathryn VanArragon, a freshman for St. Thomas women’s golf, tied for 17th place at the Summit League Championships, as the Tommies earned third out of eight teams.

    Blaine’s Brianna Fleek, a sophomore for St. Thomas women’s track and field, earned 13th in the long jump and 20th in the triple jump in the Summit League Championships. Spring Lake Park’s Emma Potratz, a junior for St. Thomas women’s track and field, earned 13th in the shot put, 13th in the hammer throw and 16th in the discus in the Summit League Championships.

    Fridley’s Evan Shaw, a junior for Kansas baseball, went 3-1 and struck out 60 batters in 42 1/3 innings for the 31-23 Jayhawks.

    Columbia Heights’ Aaron Severson, a senior for Northwestern St. Paul baseball, hit .269 with 20 RBIs and 15 runs, starting in 42 of 43 games for the Eagles. Severson also started 11 games on the mound, striking out 44 batters in 52 1/3 innings.

    Spring Lake Park’s Grace Brandt, a freshman for University of Mary women’s track and field, earned 12th in the NSIC 400 hurdles.

    Blaine’s Joseph Penner, a sophomore for Belmont Abbey men’s lacrosse, had three goals and two assists for the 10-7 Crusaders.

    Spring Lake Park’s Larissa Snyder, a sophomore infielder for Wisconsin Superior softball, had a .421 on-base percentage with 41 runs, 26 RBIs and a team-leading 23 stolen bases for the 26-15 Yellowjackets, earning All-UMAC Honorable Mention and All-UMAC Defensive Team honors. Blaine’s Morgan Young, a sophomore outfielder for Wisconsin Superior, scored six runs and stole six bases in 23 games.

    Fridley’s Caleb Groth, a sophomore for Anoka-Ramsey baseball, had a .365 on-base percentage and drove in 11 runs for the Rams.

    Blaine’s Maddy Bryant, a freshman for Concordia St. Paul women’s track and field, earned 16th in the NSIC 10,000.

    Blaine’s Kendra Schmitz, a freshman for Minnesota Morris softball, hit .286 in 18 games for the Cougars.

    Spring Lake Park’s Mason Roloff, a sophomore for Minnesota men’s golf, posted a season-best three-round score of 223 at the Tiger Collegiate.

    Blaine’s Abbey Herbert, a junior for Hamline softball, hit .314 and drove in 13 runs in 34 games for the Pipers.

    Spring Lake Park’s Owen Erickson, a junior for Concordia St. Paul men’s track and field, was the NSIC champion in the 10,000-meter run, winning in 31:32.8, and also earned third in the NSIC 5,000. Blaine’s Tyce Smith, a freshman for Concordia St. Paul, earned third in the NSIC 400. Anoka’s Priestly Jibunor, a junior for Concordia St. Paul, was part of CSP’s fourth-place NSIC 4x100 and 4x400 relays, with Smith also on the 4x400 relay.

    Spring Lake Park’s Abi Furlano, a senior goalie for Wisconsin La Crosse women’s lacrosse, was named to the All-WIAC First Team. Furlano was 10-5 with 172 saves, a .501 percentage.

    Totino-Grace’s Emilie Meyer, a junior for Drake women’s track and field, finished as the Missouri Valley Conference runner-up in the 800.

    Andover’s Ryan Fonseca, a senior for Wisconsin Eau Claire men’s tennis, picked up a pair of wins in both singles and doubles on the season for the Blugolds.
