WASHINGTON - U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack announced nearly $100 million in loans and grants through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) to support projects in 39 states.

Texas is among the states that can benefit from the program. REAP helps agricultural producers and rural small businesses expand and improve their own renewable energy sources. These changes can reduce the cost of electricity in the long run.

Mal Enterprises Inc. will save nearly 33,000 annually from upgrades on their grocery stores in Hamlin, Spur, and Tahoka, Texas according to the USDA Office of Communications.

REAP will be taking applications from June 30 to September 30. More information can be found on the USDA's website or contacting your local energy coordinator .
