GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)–After nearly 35 years of operations —renovations are underway at the Georgetown County Public Library, and members can expect several upgrades.

Officials in Georgetown are putting over one million dollars of renovations into the Georgetown County library, hoping to bring more space and better services to members.

In 2019, county officials received a letter from a lawyer that would change the future of the Georgetown County Library.

“We got a wonderful request from a little old lady we didn’t know was wealthy. She used to come in in a dilapidated car. She left us $1.4 million when she died,” said Dwight Mcinvaill, the director of Georgetown County Library.

Jean Moody was a longtime member of the Georgetown County Library who left a sizable donation when she passed away. Leaders say the funds will go towards renovating the building, which hasn’t had any work done since it opened in 1989.

“For years, years, and years, it was heavily used by the public but never renovated, so the carpeting was stained. The wallpapers were mildewy, and the lights were old-fashioned. The lights were dark. It was a grand place to come in, but thanks to Ms. Moody, sunlight now shines at the Georgetown County Library,” said McInvaill.

Members can expect new technology in August, a game room, designated spaces for age groups, and a brand-new auditorium. Leaders say libraries have served as gathering spaces for everyone in the community for years, and they’re hopeful these renovations will continue that legacy.

Officials said they plan to have a soft opening on August 1 from 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. they anticipate having the grand opening in late October.
