CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield County is in search of a county mascot and is asking for residents to weigh in: which of these furry friends should be the county’s new, adorable face?

According to the county, during recent spirit week celebrations marking Chesterfield’s 275th anniversary, a county employee vote was held to narrow down potential mascot options.

The top four selections were a raccoon, a chipmunk, a dog — specifically a retriever — and a bear.

While each of these mascots has their own unique personality, they share two qualities: their choice in fashion and their name.

“A high percentage of Chesterfield employees tied the mascot to our rich coal-mining history,” the county wrote on Facebook. “And because of that, the committee decided that whatever mascot wins, its name will be ‘Cole’ – you see what we did there.”

Cole the “small but mighty” chipmunk is described as “curious, adventurous and active,” while Cole the bear is “solitary, curious and adaptable,” with a fondness for Chesterfield’s honey bear tracks ice cream.

Cole the racoon is described as “resourceful, skillful and adaptable,” with a love of midnight snacks. Last but not least, Cole the retriever, who “rarely meets a stranger,” is “even-tempered, affectionate and loyal.”

Which of these mascots do you think should represent Chesterfield County? You can cast your vote here on Experience Chesterfield’s website. Voting is open from Wednesday, June 26, until Wednesday, July 10.

You may only vote once. However, there will be potential bonus votes available on the Experience Chesterfield Instagram account on Tuesday, July 9.

Whichever mascot design comes out on top, one thing is for sure: the county said this mascot will be used in a variety of ways. Cole may be seen hanging out with the county’s mobile information resource vehicle, or spending time at special county events, from Outdoor Fest to trunk-or-treat.
