Thursday, June 27: Oppressive heat slowly building back

Today marks the second day in a row we dodged the 90s. Sunny, with low humidity, and generally lovely weather for late June. This cooldown pattern sadly won’t last.

Both the heat and humidity make an unwelcome return tomorrow. By the afternoon, we will find temperatures in the 90s with heat index making it feel closer to the upper 90s.

It’s important to mention a weak storm system will trek across northern Missouri tonight bringing rain near I-70. Most of this activity should stay north of our area, but a few spotty showers may be possible on Friday morning.

That is not our only shot of wet weather this weekend. The next is scheduled to arrive overnight Friday into Saturday morning as a cold front approaches. The heaviest rain totals will be north of I-44. The boundary will stall across southern Missouri on Saturday before reigniting and pushing south again late Saturday into Sunday.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, however, are still possible during the daytime Saturday into Sunday. Some storms could become strong to severe during this time, but the overall risk is low.

After the front has pushed through our region, temperatures will return to cooler conditions. Highs on Sunday will be in the 80s with generally sunny skies by the evening.

All great things do not last. Monday temperatures will flirt with the 90-degree mark before skyrocketing on Tuesday. Tuesday can easily be the warmest day we have yet to experience in 2024 as the upper 90s will be possible.

The long-term pattern suggests that this is a short-lived heat wave. More rain and cooler temperatures may be coming for the middle to end of next week around the 4th of July.
