Olmsted Township police said a domestic dispute between a father and son turned deadly Wednesday night.

According to police, a 63-year-old father allegedly shot and killed his 29-year-old son at a home on Homestead Drive. Police say the 63-year-old called 9-1-1 around 9 p.m. Wednesday night, stating he shot his son after being attacked by him with a bat.

“He was distraught. He was destroyed based on the situation,” said Lieutenant Scott Sonneborn Olmsted Township.

Once officers arrived on the scene, they found the 29-year-old unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest as well as a 9-millimeter gun allegedly used.

“It was an argument that involved the baseball bat. It wasn't over the baseball bat. It was a domestic situation over bills and property,” said Sonneborn.

The son was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The father was taken into custody without charges, and police and prosecutors are still determining whether there will be charges.

This is not the first time police have responded to this address.

It was in 2020 when News 5 reported a 25-year-old man barricaded himself in the home after pointing a gun at his 30-year-old brother. The standoff led the neighborhood to be evacuated. The father and the brother were able to escape the house, and the 25-year-old soon surrendered.

Residents in the area told News 5 that their neighbors had their issues, but they never expected this would be the outcome.

“It's sad. I think he could have been helped somehow or another,” said Ron Emery, who’s lived next door for 20-plus years.

“No, I just think it's awful the way it ended,” said Helen, Ron’s wife.

BCI is also assisting police with the investigation.
