House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) distanced himself from the proposal by fellow House Republicans to use “inherent contempt” powers to have Attorney General Merrick Garland arrested for not providing a recording of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur .

Speaking with Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo , Comer emerged as an unlikely skeptic of the Republicans’ plan — dismissing it as someone else’s idea on Thursday and “not necessary” given that “the last time it was used members of Congress rode horses.”

The host asked: “Come on, Mr. Chairman, are you really going to bring the attorney general into custody?”

Comer replied: “Well, that’s [Rep.] Ana [Paulina] Luna’s idea. I think we’ve got a good case in court. The reason I think we’re in good standing in court is because the Associated Press and CNN and the Washington Post and several other media outlets are also suing for the release of the tape. So we’ve got a good standing in court. I don’t think this inherent contempt thing is necessary.”

He added: “I will vote for it, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I don’t think anyone understands how it’s going to work. The last time it was used, members of Congress rode horses to this building where I am right now. So I think that we’ve got a good standing in court now. right way and hopefully we’ll win in court because we’ve got the mainstream media on our side for once.”
