A woman has taken to Reddit in a bid to talk her brother out of choosing an odd name for his soon-to-be-born son.

She recounted how her brother and his pregnant wife called a family meeting to announce the baby's name, which turned out to be Earlgay .

The sister was baffled, noting, "I don't think it's a reference to anything. It sounds like Earl Grey tea, but I asked my brother and he said they don't drink tea."

Curiosity led them to ask if Earl was a family name , but the answer was negative, leaving everyone mystified about the origin of the name.

Her post detailed her confusion: "My very conflict-avoidant dad even told them, 'you are making a gigantic mistake if you go through with this.'"

She admitted disliking the name Earl but would have supported it; however, she found the addition of "-gay" nonsensical.

"Even beyond the low-hanging fruit that offers playground bullies, it literally doesn't seem to have a point. It isn't a tribute to anyone, it isn't a maiden name in our families, we are just stone-cold puzzled."

In the end, her brother simply said they picked the name because "it just 'sounds good to us.'".

Reddit users also shared their perplexity at the choice, with some suspecting it might be a joke.

"Sounds like pig Latin, instead of girl, it's earlgay," one person commented. Pig Latin is a playful language variation where the first consonant of a word is moved to the end and an "-ay" is added.

Following that remark, others chimed in suggesting the brother might be subtly indicating that the baby is indeed a girl.

"Wait a second, is [original poster's] brother doing this prank as the gender reveal??" another questioned.
