UFC welterweight contender Michael "Venom" Page insists that it will be Ian Garry up against unfamiliar opposition this weekend.
After a successful debut in Miami this past March, Page's second taste of Octagon action comes on another major stage in the form of International Fight Week, which will culminate with a UFC 303 pay-per-view card opened by "MVP" and Garry .
Having slotted into the rankings at #14 earlier this year, Saturday's event marks the chance for Page to make a strong ascent up the 170-pound ladder at the expense of Garry.
But while the former Cage Warriors champ has promised to show Page a standup game that will lead the "new generation" in MMA, the Londoner expects to come against a style he's experienced many times before...
Page: Garry A 'Competent' Striker, Nothing More
During his appearance at UFC 303 media day on Wednesday, Page reacted to some of the words that have come from Garry's mouth during fight week and throughout the lead-up to their showdown at T-Mobile Arena.
Page questioned what Garry means when he touts his striking as new, insisting that it's not hard to identify "replicas" of the Irishman across mixed martial arts.
"I don't see — unless he gave an example as to why, 'cause from what I see, he's a competent striker, he's got good distance control...but it's not anything that is new," Page said. "I'd say I'm new, in terms of I can find many replicas of Ian Garry. Try and find replicas of myself. You may find one, and it won't be exact. So that can't be a new wave of anything."
"MVP" brought his unique approach to the standup realm to the UFC for the first time against Kevin Holland following over a decade competing under the Bellator banner.
