Rustic country homes have a lot of lasting appeal, even as modern design and architectural trends come and go. Rural living might not be for everyone, but there's something wholesome about being surrounded by wide open spaces instead of constant noise, taking in the natural beauty surrounding you every day, and turning your quaint country house into a home.
That said, when most people fantasize about idyllic country living, they picture a cozy farmhouse or rustic villa - not this. One innovative couple took their renovation skills to the next level by building a stylish, functional farm home not out of an old barn, but a pair of grain silos. Take a look!
This ambitious renovation project was cooked up by the parents of @sydneyoneal , who jokingly called her folks' home "a soup can." At first glance, I can definitely see the resemblance. Unlike the cozy, rustic wooden exteriors of classic barns and farmhouses, the corrugated metal sidings of the grain silos don't come off as very "homey." Still, if shipping container homes can become a viral design trend, why not grain bin homes?
Sydney said that her parents first purchased this farmland a few years back with the intent of building a "barndominium," but after being inspired by grain bin home renovations on TikTok, they abandoned the original plans and focused on transforming these side-by-side silos into one big home!
According to Sydney, one silo holds a kitchen, living room, and upstairs loft with two bathrooms and a laundry room . The other, smaller silo is just a giant master bedroom with an attached bathroom, closet, and upstairs storage. The two silos are connected by a short, enclosed hallway, and a large garage sits on the other side of the "main" silo. As for the interior...
The Grain Bin Home From the Inside
While Sydney hasn't posted her interior tour yet, its builder made a video walkthrough last year. According to the Illinois Farmer Today , designer Vance Jones started getting requests to create custom grain bin homes after building his own in 2015, and soon started a business building these unique, upcycled homes across the country. Apparently, Sydney's folks were some of his clients, as Jones posted a walkthrough of their home last August on his TikTok, @grainbinguys .
This is swanky! The rustic, farmhouse vibes really come to life in here, especially with all the wood, stone, and brick lining the walls. While I figured the interiors would be spacious, I'd no idea they'd be so luxurious! That kitchen alone was worth the price of admission.
While you could tell that the main area was built in a grain silo, the only giveaway in the master bedroom and bathroom was the rounded walls. All the corrugated metal was covered by wood and painted drywall, making it look just as familiar and cozy as any other country home. Vance Jones really married form and function with this home!
Upcycled homes can be really innovative, but they're not for everyone, and it takes a strong vision (and solid craftsmanship) to bring them to life. Sydney's folks and Vance Jones worked their magic here, making this unconventional concept come to life in the best kind of way. Could grain bin homes become the next big trend? After seeing this home, I wouldn't be surprised...
