Fox News’ Martha MacCallum Predicts ‘Very Weird’ CNN Debate Will Be a ‘Fail’: ‘The Point Is for Them to Debate!’

Fox News’ Martha MacCallum is no fan of the rules CNN will enforce at Thursday night’s presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump .

On today’s edition of Outnumbered , Fox showed a clip of CNN personalities demonstrating how the opposing candidate’s microphone will be turned off when the other is speaking in order to mitigate the effect of interruptions.

According to Fox News contributor and Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen , this system “helps Trump.”

“If you think back to the first debate last time around, what hurt him wasn’t his substance. It was that he kept interrupting,” submitted Thiessen.

After being asked about what the goal of a moderator should be, MacCallum concurred with Thiessen’s conclusion that the rules benefitted Trump, but also questioned their wisdom.

“I think you want to stay out of it, you know? I think you want to put the questions out there and you want to give them an opportunity,” she answered before articulating her problems with the format:

But I honestly, I mean I’m not going to be surprised if after this debate tonight we’re talking about what a fail this thing was. Because the point is for them to debate! And honestly, when, when last time around, former President Trump kept jumping in, it hurt him. And it gave him that, so okay, so that’s why people said, “You know, you lost that debate, try again on the next one.”

But I think this is going to be very weird. And I also think with no audience feel in the room, there’s no bodies out there, and they chose this enormous room to do it in which I don’t understand. You know, when they did Nixon-Kennedy, it was in a TV studio because it was only the two of them in there, there was no audience. So it was a totally different feeling. So I don’t know, you know, we’ll see how it works.

“That was a Biden ask,” noted Thiessen

“I mean, they [the Trump campaign] agreed to everything,” agreed MacCallum
