Directive requiring Oklahoma schools teach the Bible effective immediately

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma schools are now required to teach the Bible in the classroom.

In a press release, the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) said a memorandum from State Superintendent Ryan Walters requiring schools to incorporate the Bible in curriculum is effective immediately.

Walters' directive falls under educational standards approved in 2019 , according to OSDE.

OSDE said Bible teaching materials will be provided as permissible.

"The Bible is an indispensable historical and cultural touchstone," Walters said. "Without basic knowledge of it, Oklahoma students are unable to properly contextualize the foundation of our nation which is why Oklahoma educational standards provide for its instruction. This is not merely an educational directive but a crucial step in ensuring our students grasp the core values and historical context of our country."

FOX23 heard from State Representative Mickey Dollens (D-OKC), who said this directive won't improve educational outcomes.

“Requiring a Bible in every classroom does not improve Oklahoma's ranking of 49th in education," Dollens said. "Ryan Walters should focus on educating students, not evangelizing them.”

FOX23 will follow this for updates.
