Shaquille O’Neal’s Mother Discusses Her Initial Thoughts From When She First Met His Ex-Wife Shaunie

Shaquille O’Neal’s mother has revealed her reservations about his former marriage to Shaunie, admitting to having doubts about their compatibility after their first encounter.

Lucille Harrison, along with Sonya Curry, mother of Steph and Seth Curry, appeared on the “Sway in the Morning” show on June 24 to talk about their podcast “Raising Fame” and share their insights as mothers to renowned athletes.

While on the show, host Sway Calloway inquired about Lucille’s impressions of meeting Shaunie during the initial stages of her relationship with Shaq.

“A mother’s love for a son is something extremely unique, and at some point, those sons find other women,” Sway began. “They find wives. What was it like when you first met Shaunie? What was that like knowing that my son is about to be married and has this new person in their life?”

“Before then, I had already gotten to the place where my place is secure. I don’t care who he marry or who he gets with. I know my place, and I’m secure in it,” said Lucille.

Although Lucille felt confident in her position in her son’s life, she subtly suggested that her intuition may have alerted her to potential issues with the developing relationship.

“It’s hard to see them go into a relationship and somehow you may feel maybe that might not be the right relationship,” she said. “But, you have to step back, and we have to let it happen. And I tell a lot of the mothers that we are going to remain their mothers as long as they live… we are not their girlfriends. So, I’m safe in my place.”

Shaquille O’Neal and Shaunie O’Neal tied the knot in a simple ceremony in 2002. By 2007, the couple, who had a total of six children from previous relationships, were on the brink of divorce. However, they decided to work through their issues and withdrew their divorce petition. In 2009, they made the difficult decision to split once again and filed for divorce in 2010. Shaunie sought to end their seven-year marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was eventually finalized in 2011.
