    Steuben County releases overdose numbers for May

    STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. ( WETM ) – The Steuben County Public Health Department has released the county’s overdose data for the month of May, and one fatality was reported.

    According to the health department, Steuben County saw 36 overdoses, one fatality and 12 instances where Narcan was administered.

    Of the 36 overdoses that were cited this month, five were the result of opioid use, 22 did not note a specific substance or weren’t able to be accessed for a full review and the remaining nine indicated another substance suspected to cause the overdose. These other substances included alcohol, prescription drugs and others.

    “May accounts for 36% of all the overdoses reported in 2024,” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “We continue to work with our partners to provide help and reduce the number of opioid overdoses in the county. Individuals in need of help are encouraged to utilize the support services offered by Steuben County Public Health and our partners.”

    Training for Narcan administration is available both online and in person. Online training can be found at steubencountyny.gov/narcan , and in-person training can be scheduled by calling Steuben Public Health at 607-664-2438 or by reaching out to the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee .
