Larger Lake Erie algal bloom possible

Severity similar to 2023 dependent on rainfall

The harmful algal bloom forecast for western Lake Erie is similar to 2023, unless a bloom-increasing heavy rainfall were to hit the area.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science presented their annual forecast Thursday. A toxic severity in the range of 5 or less, similar to the 5.3 severity of a year ago, is expected ― if July has a normal water flow, especially from the Maumee River. A 6 to 7 severity level could happen if northwestern Ohio is affected by a high-intensity rainfall.

The chance of such a weather event is considered low, but it is a potential risk and could mean conditions similar to the 2022 bloom, which had a severity of 6.8.

Read the rest of the story, but most of all, take the warnings seriously, especially if you have pets. No one, pets included, should be going into the water if there is a toxic HAB.
