Former Trump Adviser Says CNN Cutting Ex-President’s Debate Microphone ‘May Be Saving Him from Himself’

Fox host Larry Kudlow offered an intriguing response to the criticisms lobbed at CNN ahead of Thursday’s debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

The event is the first of two scheduled debates, which will not feature a studio audience. Additionally, only the candidate who is designated to speak will have his microphone turned on. In recent days, Trump’s surrogates and allies have relentlessly criticized the rules and moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

“So, Larry, as far as the rules are concerned, there are some who have suggested – I know you talked to Gerry Baker from The Wall Street Journal, he suggested that this maybe works against the president because if they cut off Trump’s mike, he might keep talking and that could distract Biden if he is trying to answer question,” Sandra Smith said on America Reports. I don’t know. Have you thought much about it?”

Kudlow, who served as Trump’s director of the National Economic Council, posited that Trump’s microphone being turned off when he is not recognized to speak could further benefit the former president.

“The counterfactual is if you cut off Trump’s mike from time to time, you may be saving him from himself,” Kudlow replied. “That’s just the counterfactual.”

Kudlow, who was guest-hosting the show, laughed and said, “I prefer to look at it more positively and not negatively. All right, phew. I got out of that.”

In the first presidential debate in 2020, Trump interrupted Biden and moderator Chris Wallace 145 times.

“I actually think Donald Trump lost the presidency in that debate by his performance,” Wallace said while recalling that debate on Wednesday night. “He dropped about four or five points. He never regained it.”
