Prince Harry will be honored with The Pat Tillman Award for Service in ESPN’s 2024 ESPY Awards to recognize his work as the founder of the Invictus Games.

The ESPYs honors the best athletes and sports figures for success in their respective sports. Prince Harry is set to be honored for work starting the Invictus Games, which has hosted Olympic -style competitions for wounded service members since 2014.

The Pat Tillman Award is bestowed upon a person with a strong connection to sports who has served others in a way that echoes the legacy of the former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger, Pat Tillman. After learning he would be honored with the award, Prince Harry said: “This one is for our entire service community.”

Arizona Cardinals safety Tillman left his sports career and enlisted in the United States Army in May 2002 after the September 11 attacks. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan before being killed via friendly fire.

Prince Harry founded the Invictus Games along with the Ministry of Defense and the assistance of Sir Keith Mills. The inspiration behind the move stems from Prince Harry’s 2013 visit to the Warrior Games in the United States, which showcased the potential of sport to help wounded, injured, or ill service personnel and veterans psychologically and physically.

First held in 2014, the Invictus Games has become a staple in the sporting calendar. The name, ‘Invictus’, is Latin for ‘unconquered’ and was chosen to inspire personnel following injuries.
